A Master Class in England from the Iconographers of St. Elisabeth Convent

Icon painters from St Elisabeth Convent shared the secrets of their art with the residents of England. The workshop session on icon painting was held on April 24-26 in Preston, England, as part of From Heart To Heart Festival.

The participants learned about Russian and Byzantine traditions of icon painting, saw the works of our icon painters, and tried to paint an icon themselves. Due to the fact that it is too difficult for an unprepared person to paint a human face, the visitors painted the symbols of the four Evangelists: the Lion, the Ox, the Angel, and the Eagle. Both the painting technique and the materials they used were traditional for icon painting.

Aliona Likhvan, an icon painter from Minsk who was the instructor during the workshop session, says that the participants were native Britons, and this event gave them an opportunity to interact with a different culture. Some of the participants even expressed their desire to come to Belarus and learn more about icon painting. They appreciated icon painting as a meaningful and authentic art.
